I know a few young stars today who ought to be taking notes. My favorite might be “Let’s Do It.” When she lightly sings, “When the little blue bird who has never said a word sings ‘spring, spring,’” I’m hooked. Lady Gaga dazzles with the love bantering back and forth with Bennett on these classics. “Night And Day,” “Do I Love You,” “I Concentrate On You” and “I Get A Kick Out Of You” are as easy on the ears as velvet Q-tips. The album opens with “It’s De-Lovely,” which sets the tone for a great full-on album listen with a gorgeous glass of wine and a fire. She does so without overpowering him or the songs. Her strong vocal sense complements Bennett’s suave, timeless style.
But for Gaga – it’s like she instantly transforms into a modern day Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. “Love For Sale” features a special collection of Cole Porter gems, songs from the American Songbook that Bennett has performed maybe 10,000 times. He is 95, she is 35, but when they sing together, you can close your eyes and envision them crooning at a club somewhere back in the 1940s. I am certain it helped her land the starring role in “A Star Is Born.”īennett and Lady Gaga share a chemistry that transcends the 60 years that divides them. We knew she possessed a remarkable voice, but Bennett brought out the serious singer in her. I often think Bennett’s interest in Lady Gaga made other entertainment aficionados give her a second glance.
The album was so successful, it earned three Grammys and established some major historical feats for Bennett.
You might recall 2014’s “Cheek To Cheek,” on which Bennett and Lady Gaga stunned the world with an impressive album of jazz classics. Bennett is battling Alzheimer’s disease and is retiring after an astounding, successful 70-plus-year career. I was so excited to learn that Bennett and Lady Gaga were reuniting, since this is likely to be his final album. The two are a music match made in heaven – A May/December relationship I can get behind! The pair’s latest album, “Love For Sale,” is available now.
